why the puky green color?
A: Green sets off the white and suggests a football field.
It is puky because a greyish green works better with the blue than a vibrant
green.
NOTES/OBSERVATIONS:
1)
In 1963,
the San Diego All-American City shield logo was worn by some of the players
on the front of their helmets blah blah blah. Everybody knows this by now.
2)
SHOULDER LIGHTNING BOLTS: There appear to be two primary styles: upside
down and rightside up. I consider the pre-1974 style to be upside down and
the 1974-1992 style to be rightside up. From 1992 to the present, both styles
have been used, along with a third style that mimics the lightning bolt
on the pants: the bolt is simpler, wider, and points in one direction, whereas
the other two styles point in two directions. So far I have seen this third
style worn almost exclusively by offensive linemen. I do not know the criteria
for choosing which style of the three is worn.
3)
SLEEVE ("TV") NUMBERS: The style of the numbers worn on the
sleeves of a jersey are often different than the style of the numbers
worn on the front and back of a jersey. I did not attempt to depict this.
4)
PANT-LEG LIGHTNING BOLTS: I could not pin down exactly how many spikes are
on the 1960's pant-leg bolts, so I chose 7, the most common number I found.
1979-1987 seems to be consistent at 6 spikes. 1992-present appears to vary
from player to player. I've counted as few as 6 and as many as 9. Again
I chose the most common, 8.

HELMET COLOR: From 1974-1987 the blue color of the helmet was definitely
darker than the blue color in the uniform. This probably has more to do
with the difference in materials than an intentional difference. Whether
the darker helmet blue was consistently the same color from year to year
is unclear.

Thus far, research shows that uniforms are, in fact, not uniform.
